Getting to St. Barths
No planes land here direct from the mainland — the runway's too short and the island likes it that way. It's a two-part hop: fly to a gateway, then a short flight or ferry over.
Fly to the gateway
Every guest starts with an ordinary commercial flight into either St. Maarten (SXM) or San Juan (SJU). Book this leg like any normal flight, on any airline you like.

From SXM or SJU, you'll take a short island-hopper flight or a ferry over to St. Barths (SBH). This leg is booked separately, direct with the small carrier or ferry company.

A few things worth knowing.

Book leg two on its own
WinAir, St. Barth Commuter, Great Bay Express, and Voyager are all separate bookings from your main flight.

Bring a real passport
Every version of this trip crosses an international border at some point. Make sure yours is valid at least six months past our wedding date.

Pack light for leg two
The island-hopper planes are small and weight-limited. One suitcase and a carry-on per person keeps things simple.

Give yourself a buffer
Leave real space between your leg one landing and your leg two departure — two hours, minimum.

via St. Maarten
Miami (MIA) → St. Maarten (SXM)
American Airlines flies this nonstop, several times a day, in about 3h15m. JetBlue also flies nonstop from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) if that’s an easier home airport for you.
St. Maarten (SXM) → St. Barths (SBH)
A 10-minute puddle-jumper or a ferry across the water — your call. Book this leg on its own, separate from your MIA–SXM ticket.
Route B
via Puerto Rico
Miami (MIA) → San Juan (SJU)
Frequent flights on American, JetBlue, and Delta, around 2.5 hours. Since Puerto Rico is US soil, there’s no international customs on either end of this leg.
San Juan (SJU) → St. Barths (SBH)
Tradewind Aviation flies this nonstop, around 50 minutes, multiple times a day — snacks, wine, and a private lounge in San Juan included.
Route A
via St. Maarten
JFK or Newark → St. Maarten (SXM)
JetBlue and Delta both fly nonstop from JFK, about 4 hours. United flies it nonstop from Newark, and JetBlue runs it from EWR as well.
St. Maarten (SXM) → St. Barths (SBH)
A 10-minute puddle-jumper or a ferry across the water — your call. Book this leg on its own, separate from your first ticket.
Route B
via Puerto Rico
JFK or Newark → San Juan (SJU)
JetBlue has a huge presence in San Juan, plus regular Delta and American service, around 4 hours. No international customs since Puerto Rico is US soil.
San Juan (SJU) → St. Barths (SBH)

A WORD OF FAIR WARNING
Let's talk about the boat.
The channel between St. Maarten and St. Barths is open Caribbean sea, not a lazy river, and the ferry crossing can get genuinely bouncy. We're not saying you'll see your breakfast again — we're saying pack the Dramamine and don't wear your favorite white linen just in case.
If your stomach is even a little precious about boats, take the 10-minute flight instead. It costs a bit more, it's over before you've finished your gum, and your dignity stays fully intact.
If you do go by sea: sit toward the back and center of the boat, keep your eyes on the horizon, and consider it a bonding activity with whoever's sitting next to you.
